Example itinerary from our 2022 trip!
DAY 1: Arrive at Virginia Tech for introductions! We will check out gear and get to know each other in person through team building activities. We will then travel together in a van to the Southwest 4H Center to stay the night.
DAY 2-4 (3 days, 3 nights): We hit the trails and start backpacking! We will hike 3-6 miles per day on southwest VA trails. During this part of the program, we will build our scientific knowledge through engaging lessons. We will also start working on our small research projects that will be presented on the last day of the trip. Each night we will stay in backcountry campsites.
DAY 5: We hike out from the backcountry and head back to the 4H Center. We will continue working on projects, have another science lesson, and do some more team building.
Day 6: Full day at the Southwest 4H Center. You will finish your research project and create posters to communicate what you've discovered from the data you collected in the backcountry.
Day 7: This is our last day together! Ride back to Virginia Tech. You will give your poster presentation to parents, guardians, friends, and VT faculty and staff. We will also have a farewell reception with refreshments for all attendees.
